LECTURE

Week 1

fig 1.2 Assignment Brief

Ms. Anis and Mr Martin brief us about the final project today and we need to do an animation video about the topic of 'Your Body’ or ‘Family Planning’. Ms. Anis already prepared the script and voiceover for us. Our target audience is girls. Mr. Martin advised us to work on a breakdown for the script and plan the visual for each section.

Week 1: Brainstorming

I formed a group with Adlina, Jodiann, Shofwa, Reagen, and Wan Tian today. We then arranged to a meeting to discuss the things we want to do for the animation video. My group chose the topic: "Your Body” as we found it more interesting. Here is the script provided by Ms. Anis.

After going through its contents, we identified the sensitive and challenging content and brainstormed ideas amongst on how we are going to adapt it visually into the animation video below. We separated the 17 topics into 6 parts which were evenly distributed amongst the 6 group members including myself. I chose to do topics 14-15 which were about pregnancy.

We also touched on other visual ideas, our mood board, font, color scheme, style, and transitions.

Week 2: Script Breakdown

We had another meeting to do the script breakdown below. We broke down the script into smaller sections and let Mr. Martin check. He gave some feedback and we amended it. Afterward, we had another meeting to discuss the exact visual for each part.

Week 3: Moodboard and Storyboard

While working on the project we have split the workload between our group members by illustrators and animators. Jodiann, Shofwa, and Reagan are the Illustrators while Adlina, Wan Tian, and I are the animators. The illustrator’s job is to sketch out the main graphics and arrange the frames while the animators sketch the supporting graphics and animate the frames.

As we worked on the mood board, the illustrators look for the graphic style, typeface, and colour palette. The animators look for animations and transitions. All members attempted sketching the main characters and organs and the illustrators create the final ones.

Then we split the script breakdown into 6 sections. Each of our group members selected one section to sketch for the storyboard. Our storyboard consists of the frame, duration, sound effects, narrative, and transition. My section is the last three slides below. Afterward, we showed our storyboard to Mr. Martin for feedback.

Week 4: Animatic

Each of us compiled our sketches in a video and I compiled everyone’s into one final video. It helped us have a visualization of what our final product might look like before illustrating the actual graphics on Adobe Illustrator.

 fig.1.10 Graphics Elements

I drew a book that opens and flips pages directly on After Effects following a YouTube video. It was a bit tricky as I was not very familiar with using After Effects. It took me a few hours to complete it and the progress looks good to me.

Below is the first attempt I made. The contents of the book are still empty and I plan to add our own things and change the colour of the book and background to suit our theme.

Then I watched another YouTube video to learn how to flip pages as it was not shown in the previous video. It was a little easier than creating the book itself. Below is the tutorial I referred to.

Week 6: Illustrating & Animating

We started progressing with the first part of the animation. The illustrators prepared the frames using the graphics made earlier and animators animate them. Each illustrator prepared 2 sets of frames and the animators animated 2 parts as well. I think the illustrators: Jodiann, Shofwa, and Reagan did a really good job in drawing and preparing the frames for the animators. I am so grateful for them!

As for the animation videos, Adlina and Wan Tian also did an impressive work with the animation. We applied the bounce effect that Mr Martin taught us in practical class and also a really cool liquid transition effect.

We learned how to create the liquid transition by watching a Youtube tutorial.

The video is the part I animated for part 1 of 'Your Body'. I coloured the book following the colour palette that my group chose. I have also amended the video a couple of times following the feedback from my group members. Some of the things that I corrected were the speed of the background extras and the direction it was going. I also added whooshing and ‘talking’ sound effects to improve the viewing quality of the clip.

Week 7

Then we continued working on part 2 of our animation. The illustrators prepared the frames and animators animated them. And again, the illustrators did a really good job!

 fig.1.19 Part 2 frames

The animation team also worked really hard to produce good work with the graphics. All group members looked out for each other and gave feedback to improve the animation along the way. The animation team re-edit and edit the video to create a better-quality clip from the comments given.

Also, for the part I edited in part 2 of the video, I slowed down the background extras and made them move in one direction only. The bounce effect is also used here, and it gives a tremendous effect to the viewing experience. I also applied ‘talking’ and whooshing sound effects as well as the liquid transition. Lastly, I applied an effect where a big dark circle becomes smaller and covers the whole video when it reaches the center to mark the ending of the video.

Final Outcome

 fig.1.22 Final Outcome

I am proud of my group and my effort in making this video. We have organized many meetings to discuss ideas, work strategies and to catch up with each other on our progress. Every member put a lot of time and effort to create our best works and I am so grateful to have worked with my team members and happy with how our video turned out!

FEEDBACK

Week 1
(None)

Week 2
Mr. Martin asked us to split our final project breakdown further into shorter pieces so that it isn’t too long. He also advised for it not to be too short as we will need to draw a lot. He mentioned that simple animation will do. +- 10 seconds is good for each scene.

Week 3
Mr. Martin said that my section of the storyboard is too straightforward, so he suggested some visuals for me to try out. For the “vaginal sex” part, instead of showing a couple in love with each other, I can try to show a male and female sign interlocked with each other.

Week 4
Mr. Anis said our Animatic was nicely done as it was easy for parents to explain to kids. Mr. Martin also gave a suggestion where each member of the group can be in charge of drawing a scene that is repetitive. For example, “vaginal sex” is mentioned a couple of times throughout the video so maybe I can be the one to draw that scene and it can be reused in different sections of the clip.

Week 5
Mr. Martin gave further suggestions on our graphics and animations. He reminded us to use effective panning (zooming in and out). He also pointed out that some of our composition is not balanced (too heavy on one side). He wanted us to avoid too much text on one scene and also to rearrange certain aspects to fit the narration.

Week 6
Mr. Martin said we need to readjust the composition for the period cycle donut chart. Other than that, he said that our work is pretty good so far.

Week 7
Mr. Martin is happy with our progress. He also made some suggestions to add more sound effects to our video, make the little girl dissolve into the adult woman using the morphing effect, show the full anatomy for the boy at 0:48, use easy ease on the period cycle game board scene, and apply motion blur to all frames.

REFLECTION

I’ve always wanted to experience animating and this project is a good one for me to try. The topic is interesting and everyone in the group is friendly, and we are working well together. I notice that in a group we need to be active to contribute as much as we can to get things done faster and better.

I had learned a lot of techniques through this project and the outcome can be satisfying. I am more comfortable with using after effects now. Everyone in my group is also very active and is willing to help each other. I am very happy to work with them as they would listen to my opinion, give feedback, and help me a lot. I improved my communication skills and learned how to work in a group better through spending time with them.
