LECTURES
WEEK 6: COMPOSITION THEORY 2 // PERSPECTIVE
Perspective
Three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface to give
impression of their height, width, depth and position.
1) One-point perspective
- Objects emerge from a single point on the horizon.
- Images that get closer to vanishing point becomes small.
- All objects recede towards that one point.
2) Two-point perspective
- Vanishing points on either side of the horizon.
- Helps to create a greater sense of space and gives objects
more sense of dimension and place.
- Objects recede toward two separate points.
3) Three-point perspective
- Consists of two vanishing points on opposite sides of a
horizon, but with addition of another vanishing point high
or below the horizon.
- To achieve sense of drama and scale.
- Third vanishing point on vertical axis gives far broader
range of angles.
4) Isometric View
- For creating detailed concepts of individual buildings.
- Clearly presents three sides of the design without
distorting perspective or obscuring details.
LECTURE REPORT 5
1) Find visuals from any comic, graphic novel, any visual media
that express stories that captures the three different types of
perspectives - one-point, two-points, three-points listed in
today's lecture.
2) Draw lines to trace on the perspective directions and note on
the vanishing points.
3) Upload these pictures into your blog.

WEEK 7: 3-ACTS STRUCTURE
3-Acts-Structure:
- Setup: The world exists prior to the journey, usually ends
with the conflict being revealed.
- Rising tension: A series of obstacle the protagonist must
overcome. Each obstacle is usually more difficult and with
higher stakes than the previous ones.
-Conflict: The point of highest tension and the major decisive
turning point for the protagonist.
-Resolution: The conflict's conclusion. The protagonist
finally overcomes the conflict, learns to accept it or is
ultimately defeated it.
- Major theme: an idea that is intertwined and repeated
throughout the whole narrative
- Minor theme: a more subtle theme in the story
LECTURE REPORT 6
We were assigned to think of a story for our graphic novel
assignment. We were asked to use the 3-Acts Structure to guide
us in creating our narrative.
Act 1 – Setup
Exposition, Inciting Incident
Plot Point One
Once upon a time,
there was a girl who fell in love with a boy. She sits
behind him in class and admired him Everyday,
she would take secret glances at him, but would not dare to
speak to him.
Act 2 – Conflict
Rising Action, Midpoint, Plot
Point Two
One day,
they went on a field trip. Her habit of admiring her crush
never faded away.
Because of that,
the boy started noticing that he was being stared at a lot.
Because of that too,
the girl knew her secret is out. She felt embarrassed and
depressed throughout the whole trip.
Act 3 - Resolution
Pre climax, Climax, Denouement
Until finally,
they were heading home on the school bus. The girl closed
her eyes but was not fully asleep yet. She heard the boy
saying “Yeah, she’s pretty cute,” Her heart fluttered but
did not want to let her crush know that she was awake. She
had the sweetest dream until she arrived home.
PRACTICAL
WEEK 6: COLOUR BASICS
We learned how to colour and were introduced to some tools on
Illustrator. We used the line tool, zigzag, warp tool, outline
stroke, expand, expand appearances, pathfinder merge,
isolation mode, blob tool, draw behind and draw inside.

WEEK 7: TRANSPARENCY GRADIENT AND NOISE
For this practical, we learned to create textures by adding shading
to shapes using the Grain Effect combined with linear, radial, and
freeform gradients. It was fun as I enjoyed working with different
colours.

PROJECT 2: DECISIVE MOMENT
For assignment 2, we need to create a minimalist poster from an epic
scene either from a movie, comic, other visual content, etc.
Afterward, we need to give it animation and turn it into a
GIF.
VISUAL RESEARCH:
I chose to do the honey challenge scene from one of the most popular
shows on Netflix: Squid Game.
fig. 4.3 Honeycomb Candy from 'Squid Game.' (25/04/22)
Players are assigned to carve a shape such as a circle, triangle or
umbrella into a piece of honeycomb candy known as dalgona, a popular
Korean street food treat. Winners get to progress onto the next
challenge in a series of childhood games.
As the main character, Gi-Hun, was feeling very nervous, his sweat
dripped on the candy, which gave him an idea to melt the candy faster
with liquid, which is his saliva.
fig. 4.5 Gi-hun licking the candy. (25/04/22)
He started licking the candy and the more he licked, the easier it is
for him to carve out the shape in a shorter time.
fig. 4.6 Gi-hun holding the umbrella that he carved. (25/04/22)
In the end, he was successful in carving an umbrella out of the candy.
fig. 4.7 Gi-hun licking the candy. (25/04/22)
The guards of the show wore iconic triangles, circles, and square masks.
Each shape determines their rank and level of authority in the arena.
fig. 4.8 Gi-hun licking the candy. (25/04/22)
When a player loses a game, the guards' job is to execute them.
IDEA EXPLORATION AND DESCRIPTION:
VISUAL COMPOSITION
fig. 4.9 A scene from the honeycomb challenge (03/05/22)
I chose to create a minimalist / chiaroscuro design based on this
iconic scene.
fig. 4.10 Outlining Gi-Hun (03/05/22)
Here, I outlined Gi-hun, holding the honeycomb candy. His hair is
very messy so I added that into the detail.
fig. 4.11 Draft of Gi-Hun (06/05/22)
This is my draft sketch. It is still not neat enough and the eyebrows
looked funny.
fig. 4.13 Poster draft #1 (13/05/22)
I added a background that included the iconic circle, triangle, and
square shapes from the masks of the guards.
fig. 4.14 Final: Poster draft #2 (13/05/2)
Afterward, I rearranged the title to be slanted on the side. I think it
looks more dynamic and follows the angle of the character looking at the
candy.
ANIMATED GIF
fig. 4.15 Images for the GIF (18/05/22)
I create 24 images with the shapes in the background
moving in a circle-like manner when put
together.
fig. 4.16 GIF Draft #1 (18/05/22)
For the GIF, I wanted to animate the background to give it an illusion
that the shapes behind are moving in a circle. Referring to Fig. 4.4,
Gi-Hun was holding up the cookie and there was a sun behind it. In
that scene, background music sounded like rattle snacks shaking their
tail. It was an epiphany moment but also nervous at the same time.
That was the vibe I was trying the put into the visual.
fig. 4.17 GIF Draft #2 (19/05/22)
I made another version of the GIF as the previous one had an
empty space in the middle. I tried to cover the middle area more
in this new one so there won’t be a hole in the middle.
fig. 4.18 Draft for GIF #1 (20/05/22)
As the GIF looks a bit boring to me, I wanted to animate it
more. I tried to make Gi-Hun raise his eyebrow, but it did not
feel natural.
fig. 4.19 Draft for GIF #2 (20/05/22)
I made a second attempt at raising his eyebrow and it did not
improve. I also tried to move his arms, head and body,
however, it did not feel natural as well.
fig. 4.20 GIF Draft #3 (25/05/22)
Then I thought about the most important element of the scene
which is the candy. So I attempted to make the outlined shape
on the candy glow. It still looked a bit rough.
I chose to use only light and bright colours for the outline
and removed the darker ones so it will look better. I am
finally satisfied with my outcome.
fig. 4.22 GIF Draft #2 (27/05/22)
There are 25 frames in total and I applied 0.2 seconds for
each to make the GIF.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 7
I originally wanted to do a chiaroscuro of Emma Chamberlain on the MET
GALA 2022. However, Ms. Anis advised me to go for something that most
people will know as it will be easier for them to recognise the
minimalist poster.
WEEK 9
My friends tell me the poster looks good. A friend told me that my
GIF in fig. 4.16, it looks like there is a gap in the middle, and
told me to try to make the circles, squares, and triangles flow
there more. My brother told me the GIF in fig. 4.20 does not look
nice with the dark outline. My friend said the final GIF looked
really good.
REFLECTION
EXPERIENCE:
The experience was tough but a good learning opportunity for me. I am not
really good at drawing especially when it comes to using Adobe software.
However, this assignment pushed me outside my comfort zone to experiment
and develop new skills. I felt that I have improved in using the pen tool
and I also surprised myself with the work that I did. I felt that I’ve
done beyond my expectations and definitely have improved from the previous
artworks I have done using Illustrator. As for the GIF, I have spent a lot
of time on it and felt that all the hard work has paid off.
OBSERVATION:
I realised that the more I use Adobe software the more I am familiar with
it which helps me to create designs more smoothly and is going to help me
in the future. I observed that the practical classes helped me to learn
and familiarise myself with the tools in the software. I also observed
that it took me a lot of frames and experimentation to create one short
and smooth GIF, but I am happy with the outcome.
FINDINGS:
I find that it is satisfying to see my own process and work that I created
and spend a lot of time curating. I also find that I enjoy creating
animations / GIFs when combining pictures together. The assignment made me
realise that good designs take time to create. That means even if I have
to take time off to work on other projects, it allows the idea to wander
in my head and settle. After some time, I will have a clearer idea of what
I actually want and may even have an ‘aha’ moment.
