RECAP OF LECTURE: INTRODUCTION TO BASIC COMPOSITION

1. FOCAL POINT: It helps your viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.

Figure 1.1

2. SCALE & HIERARCHY: it helps communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.

Figure 1.2

3. BALANCE THE ELEMENTS: Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly colored elements.

4. WHITE SPACE: White space when used strategically can help boost your design’s clarity and overall look by balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.

RULE OF THIRDS
  • The process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid yields nine parts with four intersection points.
  • When you position the most important elements of your image at these intersection points, you produce a much more natural image. It is also suggested that any horizon is placed on either the top horizontal line or bottom horizontal line.
  • It is a way to use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye, creatively use negative space, and create conversation between the subject and background.

GOLDEN RATIO
  • It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
  • It boils down to aesthetics — creating and appreciating a sense of beauty through harmony and proportion. When applied to design, it provides a sense of artistry.
  • It is a useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout. One very simple way to apply it is to set your dimensions to 1:1.618.

RECAP OF TUTORIAL: BASIC COMPOSITION EXERCISE
Mr Fauzi showed us his demonstration of collage elements layering & composition.

PRACTICAL - PROJECT 1: COLLAGE (PHYSICAL)
INSTRUCTION
1. Choose and identify your collage's design elements to be cut out and compose it into your own concept & story.
2. Pre compositing your collage's design elements into a composition.
3. Take photo of your pre-composition and attach on the document.

VISUAL RESEARCH

I looked up ideas from Pinterest for my collage.

Figure 5.1
I love this idea because the quote is meaningful and the collage has colorful drawings on it too.

Figure 5.2
This is a great collage because it looks like the diver is entering a beautiful garden in an underwater cave.

Figure 5.3
I love this collage too because it looks like on the outside it is very boring and when the boy opens the book, there is paradise inside.

IDEA EXPLORATION AND DESCRIPTION
I wanted to incorporate a meaningful quote in to my collage: "Visualize your highest self and start showing up as her", so I wrote it on a piece of paper and cut it into round rectangles. I've also printed images that represented a journey to reach one's fullest potential.  Afterwards, I started cutting them in shapes and arranging on a white notebook.

Figure 6.1
I tried to arrange the pieces in an order I think will look good.

1. PRE-COMPOSITION #1
Figure 6.2
This collage is shaped like a trophy. The purpose is to award someone a trophy for being her best self and for the level of growth she has achieved. It can also be interpreted as a river flowing from the bottom towards success.

2. PRE-COMPOSITION #2
Figure 6.3

The second collage is in the shape of a sculpture. It looks like an expensive sculpture you would see in a rich man’s mansion. For me this is a sign of success. It can also be interpreted as being on top of a mountain. The person (silhouette) has reached her highest self and is on top with the clouds.

3. PRE-COMPOSITION #3

Figure 6.4
Composition 3 is a straightforward message of a growing tree. It is in sync with the message "Visualize your highest self and start showing up as her" as the tree blossoms from the mountains (interpreted as challenges) beneath.

4. PRE-COMPOSITION #4

Figure 6.5
The last composition is like composition #3 just that the tree is growing towards a different direction. I tried to place in different areas to see if it will look better or not.

FEEDBACK FROM LECTURER
Mr. Fauzi says that COMPOSITION #2 is the best, that's because the composition is more balance with the 'cloud' detached from the main composition and it give a feeling on top of mountain! He also told me to keep up a good work.

FINAL OUTCOME AND SHORT RATIONALE

Figure 6.6
Finally, I glued the images and quotes together. I am very happy with the final result because it speaks to me and it is a goal that I want to achieve.

REFLECTION
I enjoyed this project because I got to work with images that I love and quote that I am inspired by. Some difficulties that I faced was that the pieces keep on flying away as I am trying to arrange it due to the wind. The small papers also keep on moving when I tried to make pre-compositions as they were too many and move easily when I accidently bump it while arranging the other areas. I also worry all the time that I may lose one of the pieces of the paper because they were so small and may fly away. But overall, I am satisfied with the result and how it turned out. I am looking forward to what I can create next!
