1. LASSO TOOL

Figure 2.1
(Source: Mr Fauzi's Slides)

  • It allows you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.

  • When you click on the Lasso Tool from the Toolbar, you will see three different tool options: Lasso, Polygonal Lasso, Magnetic Lasso

2. PEN TOOL

Use pen tool to create a path from scratch. The pen tool is the way that you add these points and the way you drag the tool as you create the points determines how they will look. The fewer points, the smoother a path will be.

3. LAYERING

Layers are different images stacked on top of each other. Together they form one final image. You can use each layer without affecting another one to make adjustment. The advantage of using Layers is that you can save a Photoshop file with all the layers included. This means you can use layers for non-destructive editing. The layers contain all the extra information and/ or images you want to add to the original file. Your adjustments in Photoshop will never destroy the original image.

RECAP OF TUTORIAL: PATHS. MASKING. LAYERING
Mr. Fauzi briefed us on Project 1B which is how to create a digital collage. Here's a video he showed us: https://youtu.be/BlW7F-fTsbE

PRACTICAL: COMPOSITING COLLAGE  (PROJECT 1B: DIGITAL COLLAGE)
1. Download all of the images here to your computer: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1aByJo6rt2QZuSUVcE56ZaXDoFSIOKRmd?usp=sharing
2. Follow this tutorial demo as reference to create your digital collage: https://youtu.be/BlW7F-fTsbE
3. Create 3 different composition digital collages from the images that you’ve downloaded.
4. Create A4 canvas size  (vertical) in Photoshop and start to do the compositions.
5. Insert 3 photo of your digital collage compositions on the section below
6. Submit (Turn In) this W3_DIGITAL_COLLAGE_1

IDEA EXPLORATION AND DESCRIPTION
I started tracing and cropping the images that Mr. Fauzi gave us and converted into PNG file. Afterwards, I started experimenting with different layouts for the digital collage.

1. COMPOSITION #1

For the first composition, it tells a story of a fencer and his shark best friend going on an adventure. Together, they can travel through different dimensions to help the people in need. The fencer is actually a thief, but similar to peter pan, he steals for the people who needs it.

2. COMPOSITION #2

The second composition tells a story of a unique man with television head that has a shark coming out of it. Because he is so special, people always want to document and take videos of him. The collage shows a day of his life outdoors when he is playing with the plant with his fencing sword while the shark tries to eat the plant.

3. COMPOSITION #3

The third composition is inspired by my dream to go travelling again after staying home for so long amidst the pandemic. I am portraying Japan, which is the first country on my travel bucket list. The mountain represents Mount Fuji, and the train is the bullet train from Japan. The paper plane is the airplane that will take me there one day.

4. COMPOSITION #4

Composition #4 is similar to composition #2 except that there is the train heading towards the head of the television. This conveys that the television man is having a 'train of thoughts' while fencing with the plant as he is being filmed. He is questioning his life.

FEEDBACK FROM LECTURER
Mr. Fauzi said that this is a good series of digital collage, and he thinks that COMPOSITION #2 is the best. He also wishes me good job!

FINAL OUTCOME AND SHORT RATIONALE

This collage tells a story of a man with a television head that has a shark coming out from it. He is playing fencing with a plant while the shark tries to eat it. The media, represented by the video recorder, tries to capture this moment because it is a very rare sight and want to share it with the public for entertainment. I placed a building at the back to show that type of building in the city he lives in.

RELFECTION
For this week’s task, I felt it was challenging at first because I couldn’t work with images that I like. So, it pushed me out of my comfort zone to create with all that I have. I experimented with all the images to see which one looks best together and tried to create an adventure and story behind each collage. At the end, I am satisfied with what I created as it came out beyond my expectations.
