LECTURE: DIGITAL SURREALISM

Realism Versus Surrealism

Figure 1.1
Realism
Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."

Figure 1.2

Surrealism

A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality.

Figure 1.3

Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art (French for "super-realism") filled with strange images and bizarre juxtapositions.

Figure 1.4

Fueled by the teachings of Freud and the rebellious work of Dada artists, surrealists like Salvador Dalí promoted free association and dream imagery.

Figure 1.5

Dadaism: An anti-war art movement with artworks that is satirical and nonsensical in nature.

Figure 1.6

Salvador Dalí was a Spanish Surrealist painter and printmaker known for exploring subconscious imagery.

What is Digital Surrealism?

Figure 1.7

Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves.

In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.

How to start creating Surrealism artworks?
1. Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
2. Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions
3. Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
4. Primitive or child-like designs

Capturing your Dream
1. Sketch It Out Take a piece of paper and pen/pencil or a tablet and start to sketch. Draw your vision out roughly. Don't finesse any details yet, but just lay out key points of your vision. 2. Find Reference Images Gathering reference images will help you greatly in realizing your new idea. Gather images that directly relate to what you have in mind.

Mindset During Creation
1. "Does this look real?" Surrealism is at its best when it's convincing enough that it could be real, however we obviously know that the subject matter you are creating is nonexistent, thus is not real. 2. Make it happen to the best of your ability. When you try to approach something challenging, you will learn the skills you may need for next time to make it work. The worst thing you can do is be afraid and back off from your idea, because you would never learn that way.

Photoshop makes it easier than ever to create surrealist images, requiring just a modicum of photomontage skill to produce impressive results.

TUTORIAL: MOVING IMAGERY
For tutorial, Mr Fauzi showed us how to create loop animation for I.G Stories.

PRACTICAL: PRECOMPOSITING
Mr. Fauzi demonstrated how to create, rename & separate layers in Photoshop as well as import the PSD to After Effects. I have also continued working on Poster design to maintain our mental health during the pandemic.

PROJECT 2B: POSTER DESIGN PROGRESSION

Developing my Design
I drafted the digital poster based on my sketch and develop the composition techniques using Adobe Photoshop

Figure 2.1
I took a picture of myself and cropped out the top part of it and replaced it with flowers. I also applied a gradient background behind.

Figure 2.2
Then I added a white sun behind my head and white petals flying around. I have also added the title, slogan, and call to action.

Figure 2.3

Then I changed the background to try to match my photo better. I have also adjusted the color of the text, my skin tone, and flying petals. I added shadows to the flowers to make them “pop”.

FEEDBACK FROM THE LECTURER 1:
On my previous progress, Mr. Fauzi asked me to move the picture of me lower to the bottom. He also advised me to enlarge the picture so that people can see the details of the flowers. He said that I should play with the arrangement of the white petals more.

I followed Mr. Fauzi’s advice to amend my work. I also changed the background to a plain color and added a gradient orange sun behind my head to match the colors of the flowers. I changed the color of the text and added a text box as well. Finally, I rearranged the text following the golden ratio so that it will look more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

REFLECTION:

This poster took me longer than I expected, but I enjoy seeing my improvements and I am happy with the outcome. The theme is very close to my heart, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to make the artwork a good one. I have also learned a lot more shortcuts when using photoshop and how to create color combinations that make the poster look good. All in all, it was a good learning experience.
