Project 1
Week 4

We were asked to observe a video from Pasta Grannie and come out with an infographics poster. I had chosen Claudia among this grandma because I think she is very elegant and her pasta looks delicious.

fig. 2.0 Video of Claudia making Curzul allo Scalogno

I made a mind map of the video that includes the steps, ingredients, and some special parts of the video and the recipe.

References
These are some references I found and can be used for the poster. They include colour palette, visual research, layout reference, and video screenshots.

Color reference
I am looking for some warm brown tones because it reminds me of what I think menus at Italian restaurants look like. I also think that these types of colours are comforting to look at.

fig 2.2 Color Reference 1
These are colours make the food look good and comforting as well.

fig 2.3 Color Reference 2
I like how the colours make this visual look simple and clean.

Visual Research
I am open to trying any kind of design that can catch the attention of the audience. I want to create something that can make them feel “wow”.

fig 2.4 Visual Research 1
This is interesting because the focus is on the bowls, plates, and pots that look like buildings and the chefs are so tiny preparing the food. Very cute and unique.

fig 2.5 Visual Research 2
I can relate to this artwork because of the design style. It is similar to DIY crafts I used to make with crafting paper and hand lettering. It is nostalgic for me.

fig 2.6 Visual Research 3
This poster has a more Italian vibe. The pasta looks like it is a lot and can be shared with the whole family!
Layout Reference
I think it's important to have an interesting visual that can be easily understood. I want my audience to understand the step-by-step process of the recipe just by looking at the poster.

fig 2.7 Layout Reference 1
I like how the steps are guided by the line that flows throughout the poster. It looks minimalistic, simple, yet kind of intricate. I like it!

fig 2.8 Layout Reference 2
The concept of deconstruction of food looks eye catchy as well. I feel that it makes the food look even more delicious.

fig 2.9 Layout Reference 3
This layout looks neat and visually appealing. Very perfect-looking overall.

Video screenshots

I took some screenshots from the video as a reference for my poster. These are the scenes that captured my attention. I used them to create the steps in my poster and also their visuals.

Week 6
Sketches

These are the sketches I made. It's quite rough but it gave me a good picture of what I want the layout to be like. I have also drawn a main visual to be placed in the center of the poster.

fig 2.11 Sketch 1

The one on the right will be the main visual on the poster. The top part is grating cheese, the middle section is pouring the shallot sauce and the bottom part is the finished curzul pasta with the cheese and sauce.

fig 2.12 Sketch 2

I drew a guiding line to show each step of the cooking process. I also included numbers so the audience can know where to look at first.

fig 2.13 Sketch 3

Sketch 3 is the most complicated draft I made because it includes the illustration of each step. In the end, I went with Sketch 2 because I feel that Sketch 3 is a bit too much and the poster might look crowded.

fig 2.14 Attempt 1

Here is the skeleton layout I am going for. It is still simple and the background looks flat and requires more details.

fig 2.15 Attempt 2

Next, I added two lists of ingredients. One for the Curzul pasta and one for the Shallot sauce. I included the illustrations for each of the ingredients.

Week 7
Final Outcome

fig 2.16 Final Outcome

I have rearranged the layout to make it neater and clearer. I have also added dust textures to the background and some grapevines outlines to give it a vintage and Italian aesthetic. I reedited all the colors of all elements to give them more harmony and a brown look. Overall, the poster has the vibe of an Italian menu and I think it looks pretty good!

Project 2

Week 6 & Week 7

For this project, we need to make a 1-minute motion graphic or animation based on the poster we designed. We will be reusing the elements and theme that we previously designed. I felt anxious but excited at the same time because looking at my seniors' work, they look really nice and fun to watch.

fig 3.0 Scenes planning

I put all the graphic elements from my poster into the video and drew a few more like adding a clock to the dough to make it look like it waitings or setting. I've also made a few versions of my previous graphics in different positions so that when I put them together, it looks like it's moving.

fig 3.1 Title scene

I reused the fonts from the poster to create the title scene for the video. I've also added some shine and bounce effects that I learned during practical class onto the intro.

fig 3.2 Attempt 1

My first attempt looked rather simple and lacked the "motion" it needs. It looked flat and stiff, and I wanted my video to be longer. I have adjusted the position, opacity, and scale to create the animation. I have also added many sound effects I found on YouTube.

fig 3.3 Ending scene

For the ending scene, I wanted it to feel like a video game "game over" scene or like an ending to a movie so I added the transition where the screen turns black flowing the circle in the middle that gets smaller.

Final Outcome

fig 3.4 Final Outcome

This is my final outcome. I made most of the items "move" more and added more sound effects so that the audience can feel more engaged watching the video. Overall, I am happy with my work, and it also looks like a cooking mama tutorial!

Feedback from friends: The poster looks nice, the layout looks nice as well as the colors.

Project 2
Ms. Anis said the video is well done and wished me a good job.

Feedback from friends: For my first attempt, my friend said it could use more motion. And for the final outcome, it looks great, looks like a video game tutorial.

Reflection

Project 1

Experience: I am happy while doing this project as I did not know there was a channel like Pasta Grannies on YouTube which I find unique and special. I was anxious at first because I was afraid that my poster would turn out boring. I had watched the video a lot of times to make sure I didn't miss any information in the video and even to get the details of the grandmother’s outfit to put on my poster. In the video, there was also a lot of information missing such as how long would the shallot sauce boil, how many servings would it make.

Observation: At first, I took a really long time to come out with the layout of the poster as I wanted something impressive, but I could not fit everything inside. So instead, I tried to make something simpler and easy to understand.

Finding: I find that time management is really important in doing anything and especially in design. Even if you spend the whole day planning one artwork, that doesn’t mean you will finish it. So, it will be better to plan my time wisely.

Project 2

Experience: At first, I was scared that it will turn out boring, but I am happy with the final outcome. I had learned a lot of techniques rough Mr. Martin's practical class and some YouTube videos online. I am more familiar with After Effects after this project.

Observation: I think that adding motion to graphics truly makes a big difference in catching the eye of the audience. Combined with the sound effects, it can make users engaged in the video.

Finding: I find that even simple motions added to graphics can make a huge difference to the visual effect of the video. Overall, I learned a lot about animating.
