REFLECTION
The Typography module was a roller coaster ride. Under Mr. Vinod’s professional guidance, I was constantly pushed outside my comfort zone to create better and better designs and work consistently. The consultations we had were clear and concise. Mr. Vinod's feedbacks were always helpful. He doesn’t always say what should be fixed, but he also asks us questions to ponder on our designs. I like how whenever I attend physical classes, I can converse with my coursemates and help each other whenever we cannot do a task. I constantly felt anxious as we were supposed to have some progress every week, which I sometimes am not able to make it. However, it still worked out fine in the end as I learned to trust my gut feeling on what was the right thing. Throughout the weeks, there were times when I completed my designs effortlessly and times when I needed extra effort to get to where I wanted. However, I felt the hardships had made me a better student and designer. From the start till the end of the semester, I have learned how to create different mediums of typographies like manipulating texts in text expressions, creating GIFs, pleasant-looking text formattings, creating a font, and making a poster with it, and finally making a telegram sticker. Designing these artworks has expanded my creativity and ability to create more with design. I am so happy to be able to have done what I did under Mr. Vinod’s guidance.
Observation
From week 1 to week 14, I noticed that I had learned more about using Adobe Software like Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and even Fontlab and Telegram to make a Telegram Sticker. I have learned to use it for more functions and am able to ultilise it again in the future. I also noticed that there are many features in adobe Indesign and Illustrator to help great better typography, such as grids and the offset path. Learning extra features in Adobe has allowed me to create letterforms more easily, like when I am using the pen tool to make the letters and the direct selection tool to fix any mistakes. Moreover, this is also my first time trying using Fontlab and making a telegram sticker. I observed that both are not hard to do, except that the Fontlab may take some time adjusting the kerning between the letters. I also noticed that I perform better when I am in class. Mr. Vinod was there, my course mates were also there, and there was this working environment going on, which helped me to produce work more effectively compared to working remotely.
Findings
After taking the Typography class this semester, I have a better grasp of digitalising my typography designs. As Mr. Vinod is such a professional teacher, I felt that I have learned to be more consistent in creating progress every week and learn to trust my guts in my design. I have learned to judge what I think is right instead of depending on other people’s opinions. Because of Mr. Vinod's advice, I can improve my design works and also my approach to creating these works. He has helped me to broaden my perspectives and how to design better artworks for the audience. I also find that his praises motivate me to create better works as well. Based on my assignments, I've found that even a simple design can produce a good outcome. I believe I need to practice using Adobe software more frequently so that I can retain the information I have learned and develop even more. Furthermore, sitting next to Wan Tian had helped me improve as well as she is always there to help me when I have any issues. Seeing the work I did, I find that I have outdone myself and am impressed with what I have created. I believe my hard work and efforts have paid off!
